When I started blogging full-time and became self-employed in my twenties, I didn’t think anything about what I was leaving behind at my state job. At the time my husband was employed at a company but he quickly decided he wanted to be self-employed as well and went back to grad school to be able to do so.
It wasn’t until I hit 30 that I realized, that by working for myself, I was giving up health insurance, a 401K, and my retirement plan. Self-employment also makes it harder to provide proof of income on a loan and therefore getting a car or house further down the line requires a lot more saving and planning.
There’s also a lot of financial stress that comes with being in your thirties. You worry more about the future and worst-case scenarios. As silly as it sounds, I spend some nights worrying about what I would do if my car died and I needed to get a new one! As a type-A person and a triple Capricorn, I acted and started trying to figure out ways to be proactive and save for our future home and cars, while also managing all our student debt.
I’ve never been much of a saver. I remember in college I’d pay rent and then most of my paychecks would go towards shopping! I’d have $15 left in my account and eat baked potatoes the rest of the month. I’m way past that stage now and I know I need to be smarter with my money. Along came 3 Nickels.
What is 3 Nickels?
3 Nickels is an app that everyone can use that answers your financial questions. It helps you take care of your financial future, your current financial life, and your 401K, and helps you give back if you want to. It shows what to do with your money if you have 3 nickels. You have one to save, one to spend, and one to give back. I was raised to give back whenever I could, so having an app that helps me do that is awesome!
With 3Nickels you have two options to get started; the free plan and the advice premium plan.
The Free Plan…
The Free Plan provides easy-to-use tools and calculators that you can use by simply downloading the app. You can work through options and save data as you go. It provides answers to your questions, one at a time, such as how can I afford that Chanel bag, a new car, or a home?
The Advice Plan…
The Advice Plan is holistic—it has tools to help you figure out how you may be able to get that Chanel bag, a new car, and a home–as well as get on track to being debt-free and saving for retirement. You just plug in your information about your financial accounts, debts, and goals and 3Nickels customizes a plan to help you achieve those goals. And it’s only $14.99 per month.
You can download the app and put in your information, connecting your mortgage and student loan debts to see how much you owe and the interest rates right in front of you. From there, connect your bank accounts to see how much you have in checking and savings. Then, set some goals on how much you want in your savings to feel secure if you had to, say, get a new car or if there was an emergency. Set goals for your student loan debt. Your loans may be currently deferred, but this app helps you see how and when you’ll free of this debt by making a small payment each month. And the quicker high-interest loans are paid off, the better!
Another thing to do is sit down with your partner or spouse and discuss goals and spending. By looking at your accounts, you might find you spend way too much on eating out and on random Amazon purchases. We agreed to keep each other more accountable in our day-to-day spending to be more secure in our finances in the future. It’s always good to sit down and have these tough conversations to get you and your partner or spouse on the same page with your spending and finance goals.
Get peace of mind by having my financial advisor in your pocket. Let 3 Nickels help you have a plan for financial freedom and take a lot of anxiety and stress off your shoulders by having a plan.
Download 3Nickels and try it for yourself through the Apple Store or through Google Play. While you’re at it, use code GRETA for 30 days free on the Advice version of the app!
